In the lands of Oceania we visited, a healthy food culture that celebrates ingredients and wine, and a lighthearted, open lifestyle, thrive naturally in everyday life. A fine coffee in hand at a cafe; an evening spent slowly with wine and a meal. At scenes, we blend that Oceanian air with the character of Shiga and Kusatsu, serving dishes and wines that make the most of local ingredients and the seasons — a place to fill both heart and body, from morning through night.Melbourne's cafe culture and Sydney's modern dining — scenes brings the two together. The espresso is Allpress Espresso, supplied from Kiyosumi-shirakawa in Tokyo; the flat white is our signature. scenes is a cafe & wine created in niwa+, Shibukawa, Kusatsu by nadeshico Inc., which also runs Nadeshiko Gyoza-ro and Robata & Sake Uomaru. scenes opened on 29 April 2026 in niwa+, Shibukawa, Kusatsu.

scenes is on the 2nd floor of niwa+, a 2-minute walk (123m) from the East Exit of JR Kusatsu Station, on the former site of Kanou Shoju-an. Kusatsu is the junction of the Tokaido and Nakasendo roads and, with Ritto, Moriyama and Otsu, forms one of the most populous areas of Shiga. Around the station are offices, hotels and homes, so the people who pass by change hour by hour.

That is why scenes keeps its doors open from 8:00 to 22:00, changing its face through the day — an Allpress flat white before work, brunch or a burger at midday, ricotta pancakes in the afternoon, and Omi beef or Ibuki salmon with a glass of wine at night. Melbourne's cafe culture meets Sydney's modern dining, served with the ingredients and seasons of Shiga.

Terrace, counter and sofa seating, Wi-Fi and power at the counter, 90 seats, non-smoking throughout, wheelchair accessible and pet friendly.
